Armed robbers’ reign of terror brought to end

"Youths in the area chased the vehicle all the way to First Avenue. The two men tried to evade the blockade but lost control of their vehicle."

A reign of terror by two armed robbers in the Akasia area was brought to an end when they were arrested in Chantelle on Sunday afternoon.

The two face charges in connection with an armed robbery that happened on June 2, according to Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli.

Mdluli said the two men were arrested after one of their victims spotted the silver Renault Clio they were travelling in.

“The person managed to mobilise members of the community and the local CPF to intercept the vehicle as they attempted to escape.”

Their vehicle was also linked to two other armed robberies.

“Investigations are continuing,” she said.

“We call on community members and victims to come forward.”

The duo’s reign of terror in the neighbouring suburbs of Chantelle and The Orchards began earlier this year with them robbing unsuspecting pedestrians of their valuables.

An eyewitness who wanted to remain anonymous told Rekord that the car was spotted as it was driving along Salie Street, looking for unsuspecting victims.

“Youths in the area chased the vehicle all the way to First Avenue. The two men tried to evade the blockade but lost control of their vehicle as they attempted to drive to Doreen Road,” the eyewitness said.

He further said the duo’s arrest came as a relief.

“Now we will have peaceful sleep and our kids will be able to walk the streets of Chantelle and The Orchards again.”

The men were expected to appear in court soon.
