Emergency boxes for those in need

“We ask the public to donate essential goods to their local AfriForum branches."

Civil rights organisation AfriForum and trade union Solidarity’s Helping Hand initiative have launched an emergency box project this week, aimed at helping communities left in need following the recent unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

“We were inundated with requests for help from people from amongst others homes and places of care,” said AfriForum community development head Johan Kruger.

The emergency boxes would be delivered to and distributed in communities hit by the nearly week-long unrest that spilled over from KwaZulu-Natal to parts of Gauteng last week.

“We ask the public to please donate essential goods to their local AfriForum branches,” Kruger said.

He added that 800kg of goods had already been transported to some areas at the weekend.

“The local AfriForum branches will then take the goods to Helping Hands Josef Silo’s, where it will be distributed to KwaZulu-Natal and other areas,” Kruger said.

A complete list of essential goods that could be placed in the emergency boxes can be found at www.noodfonds.co.za, along with a list of local AfriForum branches where the boxes can be dropped off.
