Gauteng schools ready for third term
Over the next three weeks, the MEC will use the primary school numbers, with the focus on grade 7 learners, to monitor cases.
The MEC of Basic Education Panyaza Lesufi visited Irene middle school in Centurion on Monday July 26 and other schools in Gauteng.
After Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced last week that schools would reopen on July, Lesufi visited the schools to check the readiness for the third term of the school year.
The MEC believes it is important to monitor the number of cases at schools so all learners can return.

“Experts have told us that children are not super-spreaders but we cannot risk it so we have to monitor first,” he said.
Over the next three weeks, the MEC will use the primary school numbers, with the focus on grade 7 learners, to monitor cases. If these are moderate or significantly low, the department will allow all high school learners to return.
“Overall we think the entire province is 98% ready to allow learners to return,” said Lesufi.
With 7% of teachers refusing to take the vaccine, Lesufi believes there is still work that needs to be done.
All schools in Gauteng will continue to take precautionary measures.
“These interventions will help us ensure that we continue to provide quality education to our learners while ensuring the safety of all,” MEC Lesufi said.
