North home burns down
A thatch roof house in Doornpoort burned down on Friday evening.
Two fires broke out in the north of Pretoria at the weekend, one of the blazes claiming the house and belongings of a Doornpoort family.
The Sinoville Firefighters Association (SBBV) responded to the first fire on Friday evening in Silverpine Street, Doornpoort.
“The thatch roof house caught fire and within minutes the flames engulfed the entire building,” said SBBV spokesperson Zenobia Loock du Plessis.
The family living in the house, parents and two children, made it out of the house unscathed.
“All of their belongings were lost in the fire however,” said Loock du Plessis.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
The following day SBBV responded to another fire at a house in Blinkblaar Avenue, Wonderboom.
“The roof of the house had caught fire, but luckily most damage could be prevented,” said Loock du Plessis.
Owner of the house Theunis Eloff said apart from a roof beam that was damaged, the rest of the house was undamaged.
“We smelled the smoke and saw that the fire had started above our fireplace,” said Eloff.
“My son and I got onto the roof to remove some of the tiles to let the smoke out.”

Eloff said they were fortunate they also had a fire-extinguisher in the house.
“I thought my wife was silly when she said we needed a fire-extinguisher at home, but I’m so very grateful now that I listened to her.”
Loock du Plessis advised homeowners to ensure that their homes are properly ventilated and commends Eloff’s family for having the proper equipment, like a fire-extinguisher, at hand to help extinguish fires.
