Mamelodi East office still closed after looting

“Residents are advised to go to the Rethabile post office which is only 1,8km away.”

The Mamelodi East post office was still closed this week after it was ransacked and vandalised in riots almost two weeks ago on July 12.

“Residents are advised to go to the Rethabile post office which is only 1,8km away,” said post office spokesperson Johan Kruger.

The Mahube Valley post office was also open for business.

Kruger said it was unknown at this stage when the Mamelodi East post office will be open again as the assessment of the damage and insurance work were not done yet.

Peter Dlamini, a resident, said the post office’s closure has inconvenienced many people in the area, especially pensioners.

“Elderly people now have to walk a long distance to get their social grants money,” said Dlamini.

Local pensioner Thomas Maseko (63) said looting has affected many businesses in Mamelodi.

He said hopefully the post office will soon reopen and the community members should start protecting their businesses.

“Looting has left so many people unemployed as businesses had to close because struggling owners had to start all over again,” said Maseko.
