Centurion wakes up to yet another earth tremor

“The earthquake registered a preliminary 3.5 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network.

Centurion residents who thought they had woken up to another earthquake on Friday morning, after one the day before, weren’t dreaming.

“It’s not your imagination,” tweeted the Council for Geoscience on Friday morning, about an earthquake in the East Rand of Johannesburg.

Residents who felt the tremors enquired on Facebook whether or not others felt the tremor too, and even said they thought it had been their imagination.

Residents from Mall@Red as well as Brakpan reported that they felt the tremor as well.

Geoscience confirmed a 3.6 magnitude earthquake occurred Friday morning at 06:35, at a depth of 10km about 4,2km southwest of Boksburg.

“We are still gathering more information but there has not been any reported damage to property and other infrastructure,” it stated.

The earthquake registered a preliminary 3.5 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the South African Seismograph Network.

Facebook groups were also abuzz early Thursday morning with residents speculating about whether it was an earthquake or not.

Geoscience reported on their website a 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at -26.879 latitude and 26.819 longitude on Thursday morning at 05:45.

That is 6.3km southeast of Stilfontein, North West, at a depth of 10km, Volcano Discovery reported on its website, which also reported the seismic activity.

Worldwide, according to Volcano Discovery, in the past 24 hours, there were eight quakes of 5.0 magnitude or above, 60 between 4.0 and 5.0, 151 between 3.0 and 4.0, and 238 between 2.0 and 3.0.

“There were also 410 quakes below 2.0 magnitude, which people normally do not feel. And the biggest earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Alaska with a 5.5 magnitude.”

Residents as far as Wierda Park, Mall@Reds and Eldomedows in Centurion enquired early Thursday morning on social media about the earth tremor that many felt.

A Wierda Park resident enquired whether or not others have felt it too, assuming it had been an earthquake, said “it felt strange”. Residents replied that some felt it, and others, not.

Another resident reported that she thought it had been a helicopter.

Residents from Mall@Red and Eldomedows also reported that they have felt what proved to have been an earth tremor.

DA ward councillor David Farquharson said the tremor had been felt more by residents towards Rooihuiskraal.
