Local organisation feeds the needy

The centre does not only help people with food but they also assist with counselling for drug users.

More than 1 500 people, including small children in Mamelodi, received full meals during the Nelson Mandela month.

The meals were prepared every day by Thandanani Drop Inn, for less fortunate children at “Nkandla” informal settlement in Mamelodi West.

Thabo Kgotsi from the centre said this was part of giving back to the community during Nelson Mandela month.

“The centre takes pride in preparing fresh meals for the annual event, thanks to the generous donations we received from Balwin Foundation, Big Save and FoodFoward SA,” said Kgotsi.

He said they had been taking care of Mamelodi residents by preparing cooked lunches for the needy.

“The areas we visited are the identified hotspots in Mamelodi that desperately need help, not only with food but also those who need assistance with counselling for drug users,” he said.

The centre also encouraged the homeless and drugs users to make use of others services offered, including basic hygiene services for drug users and the homelessness at the Old TB clinic based in Mamelodi East Section SnS.

“They can do their laundry and shower there. Most of our clients are drug addicts which are homeless and they come to the centre where we help them to reclaim their lives from drugs.”

Thandanani centre, which was established in 2011, has more than 30 volunteers who assist in the drug addict recovery programme and also help ex-drug users to reclaim their lives and as well as the homeless to reunite with their loved ones.

Kgotsi said assistance to the community would be offered until the Covid-19 lookdown was lifted.

“We welcome more donors and volunteers to come on board and help.”
