Flat beneficiaries demand electricity
“The project started in October 2020. The network installation was completed and infrastructure commissioning took place in April 2021,”
Family flat units’ beneficiaries with challenges of installing electricity meter boxes to their flats are advised to contact the community liaison officer (CLO) or visit the metering and vending section at the Waltloo electricity depot.
This came after a total of 37 family flat unit beneficiaries in Mamelodi East, ext. 5 next to Matimba Sinqobile Integrated centre complained that they are still waiting for electricity meter boxes to be installed in their flats for almost four months.
The beneficiaries of the flat’s demanded equal treatment when it comes to install electricity meter boxes to their flats.
Ali Chauke, a resident, claimed that the electricians installing meter boxes were installing electricity randomly at the flats.
“We have followed all the right procedures to get electricity installed to our flats, signed a lot of forms but no electricity.”
Tshwane metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo said qualifying beneficiaries/customers are required to complete the “Prepaid meter application form”.
“The project started in October 2020. The network installation was completed and infrastructure commissioning took place in April 2021,” said Mashigo.
The beneficiaries claimed electricians contracted by the Tshwane metro to install electricity meter boxes didn’t install the meters at the flats.
The aggrieved residents complain that their flats are freezing cold without electricity.
Bonnie Makunyane (45) claimed that the electricians told them they would not install meters at their flats because, according to the electricians, the residents’ names didn’t appear on the metro’s housing settlement database.
Mashigo added that the energy and electricity department utilises contractors to install the infrastructure which will then be followed by the electrification and connection of the new area.
While the infrastructure installation process is in progress, the department works with CLOs to identify qualifying customers, using the housing beneficiary list from the human settlement department, to complete “Prepaid meter application forms”.
He added that the only customers who are on the beneficiary list are allowed to complete the forms which are then processed and a meter is allocated to a customer.
“Once the meter is allocated and ready for installation, an electrician/contractor is dispatched to install and program the meter,” he said.
Mashigo added that the project of installing electricity started in October 2020.
The network installation was completed and infrastructure commissioning took place in April 2021.
