Only 22.5% of elderly Tshwane residents fully vaccinated
Tshwane metro steps up its vaccination drive by adding additional sites as well as weekend vaccinations.
Only 22.5% of Tshwane residents aged 60 and above have been fully vaccinated thus far, according to the metro.
“This is worrisome as people in this age group accounted for the largest number of Covid-related deaths in Gauteng,” said Tshwane health MMC Sakkie du Plooy.
“Indications are that people aged 35 and older are more inclined to get vaccinated.”
He called on residents to get vaccinated.
“Vaccinations are effective in fighting the virus and the only way to develop herd immunity,” Du Plooy said.
“The latest research from case studies in South Africa showed that when infections happened more than 14 days after vaccination, symptoms were 94% mild, 4% moderate and only 2% serious.”
To step up vaccinations, weekend vaccinations have started this week.
“Gauteng health authorities have set a target of 100 000 vaccinations per day. This means that 24 109 Tshwane residents must be vaccinated daily,” he said.
Vaccination sites that will start weekend vaccinations from this week onwards included:
– Mabopane indoor centre in region 1
– Suurman community hall in region 2
– Laudium community health centre in region 3
– Atteridgeville community hall in region 3
– Olievenhoutbosch community hall in region 4
– Mamelodi West community hall in region 6
– Stanza community hall in region 6
– Bronkhorstspruit community hall in region 7
Seven additional vaccination sites have also opened, bringing the number of municipal sites to 38.
“The added sites started operating on Monday, August 2,” said Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
“Anyone eligible to register on the electronic vaccination data system (EVDS) should do so and they would not be turned away at any of the approved public vaccination sites without an appointment.”
The new vaccination sites were:
– Akasia community hall
– Winterveldt clinic
– Lyttelton council chamber
– Sokhulumi clinic
– Dark City clinic
– Ga-Rankuwa View clinic
– Halala community centre
As of last Thursday, 366 139 people have been vaccinated in Tshwane.
Of these, only 185 196 have been fully vaccinated, either through a Johnson & Johnson single dose or two doses of Pfizer.
The majority of those vaccinated were in the 60 and older age group – 159 616 elderly people in total.
Registration for vaccines for the next age group (18-34) was expected to start next month.
