According to spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, the first vehicle on scene gave an initial report that the house was well alight.

“Minutes later all backup was cancelled.

“The fire was extinguished and hotspots management were completed at approximately 20:03,” he said.

Owner, Karel Meyer (70) was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is still recovering.

A neighbour, Alet van Staden said she was inside her house when she heard someone screaming.

“My husband was outside when all of a sudden he saw smoke coming from the house.

“Community members used their garden hoses to extinguish the fire and we managed to stop the fire from spreading.

“Karel’s wife, Ria said she believes that a candle fell over and that was the cause of the fire,” Van Staden said.

She added that they started cleaning the house inside.

“Ria is currently staying with one of the neighbours.

“There is a lot of damage to the bedroom as the whole roof collapsed.

“If anyone is willing to donate some blankets, a bed or some clothes, they are more than welcome to do so by delivering items at 604 Henry Nourse Street.”
