Nel fought a long battle against Covid-19. After more than a month in hospital, she passed away on July 24.

Monya Nel talks about her mum during memorial service.

Nel served as Captain in the human resources department at the Sinoville police station until end of February this year.

Her career in the SAPS started in 1986.

She served communities in Silverton, Pretoria Central, Ga-Rankuwa and Sinoville during her time as a police woman.

She was also applauded for her dedication to protecting not only people, but animals as well.

Friend and colleague Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk previously told Rekord that Nel’s passion to seek justice for abused animals, led to several successes in animal cruelty cases.

“My mum was one of the most amazing people in this world,” said Monya during Nel’s funeral service.

“I am so proud to have called her my mum. I can see, through all the messages sent to us, how much she meant to so many people.”
