Mother who allegedly drowned toddler might be ‘mentally disturbed’

"The district surgeon is to write a submission for possible referral to the Weskoppies psychiatric hospital."

The Eersterust mother arrested for allegedly drowning her two-year-old girl might be “mentally disturbed”, said a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“The accused’s mother claimed that her daughter is mentally disturbed,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.

Therefore, the matter was remanded to Tuesday, August 17, for observation by a district surgeon.

“The district surgeon is to write a submission for a possible referral to the Weskoppies psychiatric hospital,” said Mahanjana.

The 36-year-old woman will remain in custody until her next court appearance next week.

Eersterust police arrested her at Riverside flats on Friday.

Mahanjana said the baby was drowned in the bathtub.

As previously reported, the girl was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

“The accused’s brother rushed to the police station where he explained that his sister had drowned the baby,” said Eersterust police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo.
