Sangoma drowns while performing rituals

Ga-Rankuwa police have opened an inquest docket following the drowning of a 30-year-old traditional healer (sangoma).
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon at a dam in the Beverly Hills informal settlement next to Zone 15 industrial area.
Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson Shimi Tsheole said at the time of the incident, the sangoma had taken one of his clients to the dam for cleansing.
“The drowning was reported to the police on Wednesday around 11:00 by the sangoma’s client who was with him at the time of the drowning.”
Tsheole said the man told police that he had visited the sangoma for spiritual assistance.
“The sangoma then took him to the dam to perform rituals. According to the man, they both went into the dam but the sangoma went deeper and eventually started drowning. The man said he tried to save him to no avail.”
Tsheole said the body of the sangoma was retrieved by police divers and the dog unit on Wednesday afternoon.
Police are appealing to the community to avoid the dam as it was dangerous and unsafe.
