Tshwane vaccination sites ‘coping’
“Plans to open more sites will be ongoing and will be based on available resources."
There were no long queues at Covid-19 vaccination sites across Tshwane as the sites were coping with demand, the metro said.
“All vaccination sites are currently coping with the demand and no site is overwhelmed currently,” Tshwane health MMC Sakkie du Plooy said.
Du Plooy was responding to questions posed by Rekord around, amongst others, vaccination sites that were currently in operation, particularly those opened last week.
“Approximately 75-250 people are being vaccinated per day,” he said.
Soon afterwards, the metro opened six vaccination sites between Tuesday and Wednesday.
These sites were at the Sefako Makgatho university; Ramotse community hall; Refilwe community hall; Block X community hall and Saulsville arena.
He further said that the metro’s plans to open additional vaccination sites were ongoing.
“Plans to open more sites will be ongoing and will be based on available resources,” Du Plooy said.
However, he noted that residents were reportedly not making enough use of the vaccination sites which were in operation.
“We need to urge community members to use the available vaccination sites. The queues are not long.”
Du Plooy also reassured residents that the process to get vaccinated was “well-managed” and reportedly left many “pleasantly surprised” by the effective services they received at the sites.
Meanwhile, metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said an “exponential” increase in the number of vaccinations that had been administered was recorded since the introduction of the weekend vaccination programme on July 31.
“In 11 days (between July 30 and August 9) 58 064 people received their Covid-19 vaccine jabs. Of these, 27 636 have been fully vaccinated, either through the Johnson & Johnson single dose or two doses of Pfizer, bringing the total number of individuals who are fully vaccinated in Tshwane to 241 106,” he said.
Thus far, a total of 536 376 people were said to have been vaccinated in the Tshwane metro with people aged 60 and above remaining the most vaccinated.
A total of 164 660 of them had been vaccinated with 111 900 or 68% of them being fully vaccinated.
