Local regional league champs gear up for provincial playoffs

Mamelodi Newcastle United to fight for ABC Motsepe League promotion in Gauteng playoffs.

The SAFA Tshwane Men’s Regional League champions, Mamelodi Newcastle United, is ready to participate in the Gauteng Men’s Regional League playoffs.

The playoffs are scheduled to take place on August 15 and 21, at the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng.

“We are ready and are hoping for good results,” Mamelodi Newcastle United head coach Themba Moabelo told Rekord.

Moabelo, however, said it was difficult to prepare for the playoffs because of lockdown restrictions.

“It was not easy to prepare for the upcoming games because of the introduction of the level 4 lockdown that compromised our level of fitness, but we have done our best to regain our strength under level 3 and we are on track.”

He said winning the upcoming playoffs was extremely important for his side as it would motivate the youth playing for the team to do better and develop their football skills.

United qualified to participate in the playoffs. This after they were crowned champions following a 2-1 victory against Tuks in an action-packed SAFA Tshwane Men’s Regional League Final at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve last month, thanks to Potego Mokoena and Moses Vilakazi.

Mokoena found the back of the net in the first four minutes of the match and Vilakazi secured his side’s victory.

United is one of five teams including Sibiya FC, Alexandra Gunners, West Rand and Real Barcelona that will battle it out in the point-system playoffs to see which teams will be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League.

The teams to occupy the first and second spots on the log standing, by the end of the playoffs, will be promoted.

The rest will remain in the SAFA Men’s Regional Leagues, which are the fourth tier of domestic football in the South African football pyramid.

On the first day of the playoffs, the local side will play two teams including West Rand and Real Barcelona at 09:00 and 15:00 respectively.

On the second day, they will face Sibiya FC and Alexandra Gunners at 12:00 and 15:00 respectively.
