Metro officials donate shoes to local organisation

"The centre will donate the shoes to the homeless, drugs addicts and the less fortunate around Mamelodi."

Tshwane metro officials made a generous donation of shoes to the Thandanani Drop-in Centre in Mamelodi recently.

The donations were part of the Nelson Mandela month commemorations as the office of the speaker launched the #Soul2Sole shoe drive.

City of Tshwane staff and politicians were asked to join hands to inspire change within local communities that are facing enormous economic challenges, which have been made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The #Soul2Sole shoe drive aims to restore hope and dignity and encouraged metro staff and politicians to put new or pre-loved shoes on the feet of those in communities who do not have any.

The month-long campaign finished on Friday, 6 August, when deputy chief whip councillor Phuti Kwenaite represented the speaker of council at the handover of the donated shoes to the centre.

“The office of the speaker would like to thank everyone who donated shoes to this worthy cause. Through such small gestures of kindness, we hope to emulate the values espoused by South Africa’s foremost freedom fighter and nation builder, Tata Nelson Mandela,” said Kwenaite.

Thabo Kgotsi from Thandanani centre said the donations came at the right time.

“The centre will donate the shoes to the homeless, drugs addicts and the less fortunate around Mamelodi. Some of the shoes will be donated to modelling agencies,” said Kgotsi.

The centre has an anti-drug abuse recovery programme to help ex-drug users to reclaim their lives as well as the homeless to reunite with their loved ones.

The centre encouraged drug users and the homeless to go to them and get the help they needed to reclaim their lives.

Their offices are in Mamelodi East, next to the Rethabile community hall. Thabo Kgotsi can be contacted on 078 157 2417.
