Mother in Home affairs horror
Mother has been struggling to change his son’s surname to his father’s son side.
A Mamelodi woman has lost hope of having the surname of her 10-year-old son changed to that of his father.
Nomasonto Maphosa (39) from Mamelodi East said she has been struggling to change her son Tshepiso Sebelebele’s surname to his father’s, blaming the home affairs department.
Her son has been using his mother’s surname since he was born in 2011.
The home affairs department in Mamelodi East has been sending her from pillar to post since 2019.
“Every time I go there, I am told the new birth certificate will take three months.”

Maphosa said she was tired of waiting in long queues and sending emails just to be told that they are still processing her son’s documents.
“The documents should have been processed by now as it normally takes about only three months,” said Maphosa.
She said she started in November 2019 and was told to come after three months in January 2021.
However, in January 2021 the officials extended it to another three months.
Maphosa said unfortunately the whole country was forced to go under lockdown and every time she went thereafter she was told about the backlog up to date.
“The surname change has stopped a lot of things to my son’s life and education when it comes to signing documents at school,” said Maphosa.
“I can’t even open a savings account for my son. At the moment, he has been chosen as one of the best learners to attend Saturday school classes at a German school for the science and mathematics classes,” she said.
Maphosa said she has lost count on the documents she has already signed but still the Department of Home Affairs was failing to deliver.
Maphosa pleaded with the department to please change her son’s surname or give an explanation why it was taking so long for the documents to be changed.
The Department of Home Affairs had yet to provide comment by the time of going to press.
