11 undocumented nationals arrested at Wolwespruit informal settlement

"This was done after information was received of possible illegal activities that are taking place in the area."

Brooklyn police have arrested 11 undocumented people at the Wolwespruit informal settlement last week.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Webster Scheepers said police along with the TMPD and Home Affairs Immigration officers joined forces to search the area on Solomon Mahlangu and Nossob roads in Erasmuskloof.

“This was done after information was received of possible illegal activities that are taking place in the area,” he said.

“During the operation 11 undocumented people were found. They were arrested with the assistance of the Home Affair Immigration officers for the contravention of the immigration act.”

He said police officers also confiscated home-made liquor that was left abandoned in the field.

The operation continued with stop-and-search operation in the area where Aarto fines were issued for various road traffic offences.

“Pamphlets were distributed to make the community aware with regards to the dangers of driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs,” he said.

The suspects, age between 21 and 50, were detained at the Brooklyn SAPS and will appear before the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.

Brooklyn police station commander, Brigadier Kushie Pietersen applauded the arrests and thanks all involved.

She said high police visibility and operations would continue to ensure that Brooklyn communities are and feel safe.
