Local skatepark is safe space for kids
“This is a public space that kids can call their own.”
A new skatepark in Mamelodi is a safe place where local kids can meet and play, according to its founder.
“This initiative is a chance to positively support children’s development by providing them with infrastructure, resources and to provide a safe space for the community,” said founder Poelo Mofolo.
The skatepark is located at the Mamelodi West beer hall, next to the police station.
Mofolo said safe spaces for children are almost “non-existent” in Mamelodi.

“Safe environments are important for children; places where they can emotionally, physically, socially and intellectually achieve growth,” he said.
“This is a public space that kids can call their own.”
According to him, the initiative demonstrated the value of playful learning and empowered children to take initiative in their own lives.
“These goals will be achieved through various programming and spatial qualities,” said Mofolo.
“Schools in the township offer limited curriculums that fail to harness the creative energy and interests of children in the community. This is not only a safe space for them but also a place where they can get a creative education, a meal and therapy – if needed in some cases.

“This initiative wants to be the bridge that works closely with schools and the community at large.”
Mofolo said they wanted to build a recreational facility for Mamelodi’s youth, using sports and art as a learning tool.
“Many township kids end up giving up because they don’t have the right infrastructure in their areas, or they can’t afford to pay for transport to go to skateparks in the suburbs.
“These challenges breed contempt in a young person’s outlook on the world.
“Here we have skaters from the community who are keen on being leaders and mentors – one of them being Nicodemus Diketso Mokwena, an art teacher at Boikgantsho primary school in Mamelodi East.
