Montana community give back to healthcare workers

“We sometimes take for granted the massive effort and long hours hospital staff work. This was just something small to say thanks.”

Residents in the north of Pretoria recently took the initiative to bring gifts to healthcare workers in Montana.

Last Friday evening, around 18:30, community members met at the China mall in Montana to take a slow-drive to Montana hospital where they gifted 300 containers filled with goods to hospital staff.

“It was just something small to say thanks to our healthcare workers,” said organiser Daleen Geldenhuys.

Geldenhuys, using social media platforms, had asked locals and business owners for donations to put together a gift for hospital staff.

“I feel we do sometimes forget and take for granted the massive effort and time our healthcare workers invest in saving lives. This donation was just to say we appreciate them.”

Geldenhuys said Tupperware had generously donated the 300 containers, which were then filled with sweets, cookies, sanitiser products and other goods sponsored by local businesses and individuals.

“We just want to thank each and every person involved in donating and also delivering the gifts at the hospital,” she said.

“We also thank the metro police for guiding our vehicles to the hospital.”

Geldenhuys said social distancing and strict regulations were adhered to during the handover.

To crown the “magical evening”, a small group of residents joined in song outside the hospital.

“I think that it was the most precious gift of all. To see how much the hospital staff appreciated the gesture, was truly heart-warming.”
