CIT robbery victim recovering in hospital

"They have inserted pins in the fractured leg but they haven't closed the open wound."

A Pretoria security guard was still recovering in hospital after surviving a cash-in-transit robbery outside of Pretoria last week Thursday.

“He went to the operating room again on Sunday for his leg and we are waiting to hear if he has to undergo any more operations,” the guard’s wife told Rekord.

“They have inserted pins in the fractured leg but they haven’t closed the open wound.”

She told Rekord last week Friday her husband’s partner had just passed away.

“I’m very angry. The attackers did not even give them a chance to get away from the vehicle before bombing it. My husband’s leg was almost cut off by a piece of metal from the vehicle because of the blast. Doctors are still trying to fix his leg.”

The woman said her husband was disappointed his friend did not survive the attack.

“This has affected him badly. They were partners and they worked together for more than two years now, sometimes even seven days a week.”

She said the wife and children of her husband’s partner have also been hit badly by the incident.

“I saw them on Saturday. They are not good at all, but it’s part of life that you have to go through.”

She said despite all the dangers that come with her husband’s job, he still enjoyed his job.

“All you can do is pray and ask God to be with him every day, but I feel the police are not doing their job. Criminals do whatever they want and get away with it.”

She also urged the government to create more job opportunities for people.

“Many people are unemployed and they end up doing criminal activities. People feel like they are wasting their time searching for jobs whereas they can be criminals and make money.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said the cash-in-transit heist happened in Kgabalatsane in the North West.

“A BMW rammed into a cash-in-transit bakkie, forcing it to come to a halt. An unknown number of suspects then used explosives to gain access to the money.”

Muridili said the robbers fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving their damaged vehicle on fire.

“It was reported that the getaway vehicles were a grey Audi, BMW and possibly a Mazda.”
