Mushroom clean-up followed completion of access road
“We accomplished a lot today, we made a visible change, while trying to come up with more permanent solutions.”
The Hennops Revival NPO held a “mushroom clean-up” on Monday at two bridges in Centurion where the Hennops River was particularly dirty.
The clean-ups were held at the Supersport Park bridge and Lenchen bridge in Centurion.
Founder of the NPO Tarryn Johnston said they cleaned sidewalks and stormwater drains, and of course, the river itself. Bags for waste as well as recycling bags were provided by Hennops Revival.
“This was a huge task and we are by no means finished,” said Johnston.

“This task needs a strategy and post-clean vision as well as community buy-in from the occupants of an informal settlement in the area.
“We accomplished a lot today, we made a visible change while trying to come up with more permanent solutions.”
She said Hennops Revival’s vision was “to create even the slightest shift within these occupants’ awareness to let them also experience a litter-free river as it has never been cleaned before”.
“They are living in extreme poverty and a lack of knowledge in this respect.
“We focus on inclusion. But besides that, there are greater plans to be implemented upstream in Tembisa where most of the waste comes from, as well as locally. But these plans require funding and, of course, time.”

Johnston said community members “are also using this area as a dump bringing all sorts of waste, a lot of which can’t be recycled”.
Another great accomplishment was the completion of the access road at Irene Country Club which will be used by the metro to collect waste recovered from the Hennops River from their “soon-to-be-implemented litter catchment system”.
Hennops Revival resumed work on installing a litter trap as part of a litter catchment system and will bio-monitor its water henceforth.

“From a footpath to an access road in just one day, that was the fruit of Friday the thirteenth,” Johnston said.
“Rainer Lammerding and Lebombo Pallets sponsored Monday’s clean-up as concerned and proud residents of Centurion.”
