Five arrested for impersonating TMPD officers

Tshwane Metro Police Department says five bogus TMPD police officers were arrested this week in the North West province.

A crime syndicate of bogus police continues to haunt the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) as five people – pretending to be TMPD officers– were arrested this week.

On Friday, TMPD welcomed the arrests of five suspects arrested in the North West province earlier this week.

According to the TMPD, the five suspects were found in possession of TMPD uniforms and a firearm with an erased serial number.

“The suspects were impersonating TMPD officers. As the TMPD, we welcome the arrest and can confirm the suspects are not TMPD officers and the vehicle used does not belong to TMPD,” the department said in a statement on social platforms.

Furthermore, the department said investigations were ongoing to determine how the suspects got hold of the uniforms.

“We urge anyone who might have any information regarding this incident to contact their nearest SAPS or TMPD at 012 358 7095/6.”

This was not the first time the department raised concerns over fake police officers.

In January, the department warned motorists of two men impersonating officers and hijacking people on the road.

The two men, who drove a white VW Polo with a blue light, dressed in the department’s official uniform.

They pulled motorists off the road only to hijack them.

The South African Police Service has also faced the issue of bogus police.

In May Lyttelton police issued an alert about bogus officers roaming around at night after a couple was hijacked, kidnapped and robbed in the east of Pretoria by three men posing as police officers.

The police have previously advised motorists that when they are stopped by cops and feel unsafe, that the motorist should put on their hazards and drive to the nearest safe, lit place like a petrol station, public place or police station to attend to the cops.
