Illegal dumping site leaves residents sick and tired
“The illegal dumping site takes place at the stand that has been empty since 1990.”
Mamelodi residents were still illegally dumping rubbish at a stand that has been left empty since 1990.
Efforts were made by Tshwane metro and nearby residents of Mamelodi east extension 4 and section 14 to stop the littering but failed.
The illegal dumping site is next to Senabe Pub in Mamelodi East at Phatudi Street between extension 4 and section 14.
Nico Thwala, who lives next to the site in section 14, said this was not the first time he launched a complaint about the dumpsite.
“Residents continue to dump rubbish at the site and put our health at risk. My family had to inhale the bad smell for years now,” said Thwala.
Residents said various measures have been put in place to try and stop the illegal dumping and not long ago the ward councillor tried to start a community park at the spot, but all failed.

“The community park was not a success since we were told the stand belonged to someone and the community park project was stopped with immediate effect.
“The owners have since disappeared and people continue dumping at the stand,” said Thwala.
“We are unable to open windows to enjoy fresh air because of flies and mosquitos. Our health is at risk because of the bad smell.”
The area has overgrown grass and it is also dangerous for school children since they make use of the small footpath to go home.
“We are always locked inside our houses fearing for our health, unable to open windows. Some residents have already started complaining about their lungs including my son and wife,” Thwala said.
He said there is so much litter everywhere that it would take months to be cleaned.
They are pleading with the Tshwane metro to help and use the empty stand by turning it into a community park or to find the owner.
“The problem is every time they clean the place; people come and dump the rubbish again, especially at night,” said Thwala.
“We must protect our empty space and keep it clean at all times,” he said.
Thwala concluded that they have also put up notice boards.
Tshwane metro has yet to comment.
