Mother and child injured in Centurion head-on collision

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the mother while rescue technicians cut her free using the jaws of life.

A 49-year-old mother and her 11-year-old son were injured following a head-on collision in Centurion on Monday evening.

Emer-G-Med paramedics arrived on the scene on Olivenhoutbosch Road, to find a light delivery vehicle and a sports utility vehicle had collided head on, leaving the driver of the delivery vehicle trapped in the wreckage, said Kyle van Reenen of Emer-G-Med.

“Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the mother while rescue technicians cut her free using the jaws of life.

Once free, she was placed on a stretcher used for the treatment and prevention of spinal cord injuries,” he said.

The critically injured mother was then transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

“The passenger, her eleven-year-old son, was found to have sustained a fractured arm and was treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.”

Van Reenen said the driver and only occupant of the second vehicle did not sustain any serious injury.
