"The victims were accused of being part of a gang called amaRussia which has allegedly been terrorising Ga-Rankuwa residents."

Police are investigating a murder case and five cases of attempted murder after six people were attacked during a mob justice-related incident in Ga-Rankuwa View, phase 8 on Monday evening.

According to residents, the victims were accused of being part of a gang called amaRussia which has allegedly been terrorising locals.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele said police were called about vigilantism happening at the house around 22:00.

“On arrival, police found about 300 community members burning tyres outside the house where community members attacked a group of people allegedly calling themselves amaRussia.

“The community ordered the alleged gang to come out of the house or else they would burn down the house. One woman and five men got out of the house and the community attacked them. A man, aged 19, was killed and certified dead on the scene, the other five were taken to hospital and the RDP house was also burnt.”

Makhubele said the victims were reported to originate from Maboloka and are accused of being responsible for crimes in the area.

The mother of the victim who died said she was devastated by the way her child lost his life.

“These children were staying in phase 1 and I decided to get them this house because they were being accused of criminal activities. The people he was with inside the house were his cousins. I am not OK, no mother deserves to see her child die like that.”

Makhubele said police are continuing with their investigations.

No arrests have been made.
