Pretoria man pulls off a bogus ‘drug trafficking arrest’ wedding proposal

“I decided I would get a special wedding ring made for her using our money saved up for home renovations.”

A bogus drug trafficking arrest ended in a local man getting down on his one knee and proposing to his girlfriend in the west of Pretoria over the weekend.

The stunt went viral on social media.

Pierre Duvenage (31) proposed to his girlfriend of six years Melina du Preez (25) last week Friday, which also marked their sixth anniversary.

Duvenage said he wanted to do something out of the ordinary, staging a fake drug trafficking arrest so that he could propose.

With the help of his older sister, he pretended to be stopped and searched by a Tshwane metro police officer.

The officer then played along by pretending to accuse them of trafficking drugs.

“I wanted to do something out of the ordinary. I didn’t want to ask her like other people typically do,” he said.

Duvenage said he wanted his girlfriend to be pleasantly surprised once she realised what was going on.

“Our parents and others hid around the corners where they could witness the entire thing. I pretended to argue with the officer and was ordered to step down and get on my knees at the back of our car. The officer then got her out of the car and brought her around where she saw me,” said Duvenage.

When Du Preez came around to the back of the car, he used this as an opportunity to surprise her and propose to the love of his life.

The couple started dating on August 20, 2015. He said they always discussed plans of getting married on the day of their anniversary.

Duvenage realised that the next time their anniversary would fall on a Saturday would be in 2022 and it would be an ideal day for them to finally walk down the aisle.

“The next time our anniversary would be on a Saturday is only in the year 2033. This got me seriously thinking about us and I decided I would get a special wedding ring made for her using our money saved up for home renovations,” said Duvenage.

“I was super happy with how it turned out. Since then, I needed to make sure Melina doesn’t see the savings account and find the ring which I hid in a toolbox in the garage.

“We are looking forward to the future as husband and wife with kids someday and don’t want to change anything in our relationship going forward. Everything since day one up to now, six years later, has been a blast and will be for the foreseeable future,” said Duvenage.
