The University of Pretoria (UP) has been rated the second best university in South Africa.

UniRank has released the Top 200 Universities list in Africa for 2021. UP has been recognised as the second best university in Africa.

“UP is a leading research-intensive university in Africa, and to be recognised by UniRank is a privilege,” said the Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor, Tawana Kupe.

“Such rankings only propel us to do and achieve more. Ultimately, we would like to be a leading African global institution.”

It has ranked the highest in South Africa for computer science and engineering, veterinary sciences and finance.

UP, which has more than 45 000 enrolled students, is also famously known for its outstanding participation in sports.

The ranking bases its selection on whether the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications.

The university has to be accredited by the higher education organisation of a country.

It is also based on whether the university can offer distance and contact learning.

Dr Mxolisi Masango, the Deputy Director of the Department of Institutional Planning and Research and Analytics, said that the ranking also shows an improvement in the quality and impact of research produced by UP academics.

The University of Cape Town took the top spot.
