House robberies, burglaries remain a problem for Centurion

If you feel like you are being followed, don't drive straight home but drive to the nearest police station to avoid being tailgated.

Over the past week, more than five house robbery cases were reported in Centurion, according to JP le Roux of Monitor Net.

He said the robberies were usually in the mornings and early afternoons.

“Last week, we were called to a house robbery in Rooihuiskraal North where five armed suspects robbed an elderly woman before fleeing with her belongings,” Le Roux said.

“On arrival, we were informed that the suspects just left and we managed to give chase. The suspects were driving recklessly on the busiest of roads and we had no choice but to give up the chase for the safety of other motorists,” he said.

Monitor Net and police did make a successful arrest last Wednesday when three suspected robbers were nabbed in Lyttelton.

Le Roux said house robberies in Centurion were getting out of hand.

“We get calls of robberies, attempted burglaries and so forth. Every day is the same problem and seems like it’s only getting worse,” he said.

“We call on citizens to avoid falling victim to house robberies by being vigilant at all times. Do not leave your gates, garage, or windows open as this creates an opportunity for criminals.”

He also advised motorists to keep an eye on who’s in front or behind them.

“If you feel like you are being followed, don’t drive straight home but drive to the nearest police station to avoid being tailgated.”

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Sergeant Divine Nkuna said cases such as theft, house robberies and burglaries were regularly reported but said the number has since decreased in the past month or two.

“We have had these crimes happening in all our four sectors but we cannot say it has increased. It is actually less now with the unrest operation that is been on since 13 July.”

She said that more police were being deployed.

Nkuna said residents should not confront the criminals but rather call the police and security officers.
