Planned metro water outage suspended until further notice

The 40 hours maintenance work by the water utility, was scheduled for August 31 until September 2.

Rand Water has suspended its planned major water outage for maintenance purposes in various areas of Tshwane metro until further notice.

“They informed us that the outage, which would have lasted about 40 hours, would not take place as planned,” said Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

The outage was scheduled for parts of Region 3 and 4, affecting areas such as the Pretoria CBD and townlands, Atteridgeville, West Park, Laudium, Mooiplaats and Saulsville.

The maintenance was scheduled from August 31 until September 2.

Mashigo said this was due to plans to repair a pipe leak on the H28 and H42 cross at the Atteridgeville Prison Gardens.

“We appeal to region 3 and 4 residents who were left without water for the past few days until last night when water was restored, to use water sparingly to allow the reservoir levels to recover.”

He reminded residents to be mindful that the restoration of water supply was a fragile process as reservoirs had to first recover before the supply network could fill up to ensure sufficient water pressure to households.

“This process has to be conducted gradually to avoid unfortunate incidents such as pipe bursts due to the presence of air pressure in the empty pipeline.”

The postponement follows the recent water limitations that had affected the entire metro and most impacted residents of regions 1, 3 and 4.

Rand Water implemented stage 1 water restrictions in Tshwane last week Thursday.

The water utility had initially placed regions 1, 3 and 4 on stage 3 water restrictions following a drop in its reservoir water levels.

Mashigo said restricting water to parts of Tshwane was inevitable.

It was the only viable option to save the distribution network from collapsing, he said.

The announcement on citywide stage 1 restrictions is with immediate effect.

He pleaded with all residents to reduce water consumption.

“Residents are further reminded that the water restrictions that were imposed previously in line with the water supply by-laws were never withdrawn and are therefore still applicable.”

Residents are reminded of the following specific water restrictions:

– Do not water or irrigate gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler system between 06:00 and 18:00.

– Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes or high-pressure systems.

– Do not fill swimming pools.
