Heavily chained dog rescued from Danville

The latest dog rescued was not the first to be chained and apparently kept as a guard dog.

A dog was rescued by a north animal shelter after it was found with a heavy chain around its neck.

The scared animal was spotted by residents in Ashley Street, Danville at the weekend.

The dog was brought to Wollies animal shelter in Pretoria North where he was finally freed of the heavy chain around his neck.

“The chain around his neck was massive and had a padlock on,” said Wollies owner Cilla Trexler.

“The dog weighed around 15kg. The chain that was removed weighed 2.65kg.”

The dog eagerly ate food and gulped up water given to him by its rescuers.

“The cruelty of people who still thinks it is okay to chain their dogs up, never ceases to shock me,” said Trexler.

Wollies sheltered many abandoned and abused animals.

Trexler and other volunteers at Wollies worked tirelessly to educate people on the sterilisation of animals and avoiding buying animals from breeders.

Trexler said the latest dog rescued was not the first to be chained and apparently kept as a guard dog.

“The dog was not sterilised, nor microchipped. It is clear his owners had no love for him and I am grateful he was rescued from this cruel life.”

Trexler said she hoped for new and loving owners to adopt the mixed-breed male.

“He has had such a hard life, he deserves some happiness – as do all the animals in our care.”
