A wildlife photograph taken locally is making waves in the international Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards 2021.
The photo of a pied starling taken by photographer Andrew Mayes at the Rietvlei nature reserve is one of the finalists in the international Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards 2021.
The severe look on the bird’s face earned it a place in The Affinity Photo People’s Choice Awards.
Mayes (41), who lives in Randburg, said he was pleased that his photograph made it to the finals.

“I just happened upon the flock of birds in a tree at the nature reserve,” Mayes told Rekord.
The random encounter gave him the opportunity for this excellent shot of the grumpy-looking starling.
Mayes said he has had a passion for wildlife photography for years.
“It is only for the past three or four years that I’ve been doing it professionally.”
Mayes’ photograph is among 42 finalists in this year’s awards.
The funny wildlife images entered in the awards is enough to turn even the grouchiest starling’s frown upside down.
