Water tankers arranged as east water plant is shut down

A system failure at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant meant the facility had to be shut down this week while repairs were conducted.

Tshwane metro arranged for water tankers to go to Bronkhorstpruit communities as it attended to an urgent failure at it’s local water treatment plant supplying the area.

The communities affected by the emergency shutdown are Bronkhorstspruit; Bronkhorstbaai; Masada; Cultural Park; Riamapark; Zithobeni; Rethabiseng; Ekangala; Ekandustria and Thembisile Hani local municipality.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the unavoidable supply interruption to the region was due to operational components’ failure at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant.

“The system failure was caused by unpredictable power outages, blocked pump motors as well as faults at the raw water pump station among others, all resulting in the plant operating at a very low capacity.

“In an effort to protect the entire system from crashing, the metro is compelled to shut down the plant for necessary repair work.”

Mashigo said the metro’s technicians had been on-site attending to the faults.

He said due to the magnitude of work and the materials required, operations would only return by September 10.

Mashigo said residents would be kept abreast of developments.

He encouraged communities nearby, which still had available water, to use it sparingly.

“The metro sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered as a result of this emergency shutdown.”
