Vehicle damaged in alleged north spiking incident

Police could not immediately confirm the spiking on Wednesday morning, but asked motorists to remain wary.

A vehicle was damaged in another alleged spike trap incident – this time in the north of Pretoria.

The spiking allegedly occurred on the N4 highway, near the N17 crossing north of Pretoria around 05:00 on Wednesday morning.

Community policing forum groups shared a warning for motorists to be wary after the alleged spiking was reported on social media groups.

Police could not immediately confirm the spiking.

“We cannot go on information reported on social media, but will confirm if the case was reported with the police,” said spokesperson Constable Lindi Mdluli.

Cases of “spike attacks” were especially prevalent in the east of Pretoria, but has seen a recent drop.

Rekord previously reported that police had seen a sharp decline in the number of incidents reported on main roads and highways in the east.

“Although such incidents have seen a recent drop, I would like to warn motorists to remain vigilant when on our roads,” warned Boschkop police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane.

The known hotspot areas were: the old Bronkhorstspruit Road between Savannah estate and the Jan Ellis filling station, the N4 highway and the Diamond Hills toll gate.

“Such attacks, however, happen anywhere, wherever there are no streetlights and isolated areas next to bushes or open spaces,” Mbatsane said, urging motorists to avoid unlit roads and to take alternative routes.

Police also said motorists should report all crimes and spike traps at their nearest police station.
