Moot primary school learner commits suicide

The P.S. Fourie Primary School in Eersterust was this week rocked by the news of a learner who reportedly recently committed suicide.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said on Wednesday, the department received “gloomy news” as it was confirmed that a grade 7 boy pupil from Eesterust had died.

“Our reports allege that the boy learner died as a result of suicide,” he said.

“It is also alleged that he had not been attending classes since the beginning of term 3 on July 26.”

Mabona said the department’s psycho-social unit was providing continuous support to the families and classmates of the learner who passed away.

This death comes after a Pretoria grade 11 boy learner also suddenly died on Tuesday after he fell sick during a physical training period at a school in Queenswood, Pretoria.

On Wednesday, a grade 10 boy learner from Emadwaleni Secondary School in Soweto also died.

“Initial reports indicate the boy learner allegedly hung himself after quarrelling with his parents.”

“We are deeply saddened by these untimely deaths,” said Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

“We wish to convey our condolences to all the families who lost their children in these different incidents.

“We mourn with the families, friends, teachers and fellow learners of these learners. There are no adequate words to express our sorrow at the loss of a child. We hope that the families will find comfort in the knowledge that we, too, share their loss.”
