Clean-up campaign in Doorpoort
“We also want businesses to get involved because if your business is in Doornpoort, we need you to take pride and also get involved.”
Doornpoort Serve has called on residents and businesses to come together on October 2, to clean up Airport Road and the surrounding open spaces.
Community activist and one of the founders of Doornpoort Serve, Elsjè Horn, said as residents of the area, they felt it was important to take responsibility and clean their own locality.
“We know how it looks. We cannot sit and wait for the metro to clean up or do something about it.
“We need to take responsibility and not just sit and wait for someone to do something about it. We need to be able to go and do the hard work. We want to be proud of how our community looks.
“We are going to clean the open field next to the KFC, moving towards the airport,” said Horn.
“Next to the airport it’s quite a mess because people park their cars under the trees and have their KFC or whatever they are eating then leave their trash there.”

Horn said on their previous clean-up which was held on May 29, at the open field next to the KFC, it took four hours to collect 280kg of waste and 240kg recyclable items.
She said the sad thing about their previous clean-up at the same field was that after they cleaned the field, it was not even a few weeks and it was already looking the same.
“There are a lot of people staying in the open field because they do not have homes. I suggested during the previous clean-up that we get them drums so that they are able to throw their rubbish in those. That way, they will not just throw their litter it anywhere.
“On October 2 we are going to do the same thing we did in May. But we want more involvement from the residents. In the previous clean-up, we were not more than 25.
“We need to encourage people to not litter and take responsibility because we cannot just go on and throw litter everywhere.
“We also want businesses to get involved because if your business is in Doornpoort, we need you to take pride and also get involved.”
