Cops warn of yet another spike in vehicle-related crimes

Police warn motorists to be vigilant as this was the third time in recent months that an increase in this crime category was recorded.

Police in the Pretoria North policing precinct have warned of yet another increase in vehicle-related crimes in the area.

“Theft of motor vehicles has been on the rise recently,” police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.

This was the third time in recent months that an increase in this crime category was recorded.

Last month, Miyen urged motorists to be cautious when they parked their vehicles.

At the time, vehicles that were said to be targeted were Nissan NP200 and NP300 bakkies.

She had also warned of an increase in the crime category in May, where vehicles that were being targeted were said to be Fiat Uno, Toyota Tazz and Nissan NP200.

Drivers of the reportedly targeted vehicles were advised to install gear-locks, immobiliser units and steering or pedal locks as these measures would make it more difficult for criminals.

In a previous interaction with Rekord, Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan Van Dyk advised motorists to park inside the property where they were visiting to always ensure their vehicles were locked.

Additional safety tips he offered were:

– Always lock your doors, even if you are in the vehicle and keep the windows closed.

– Do not leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you think you will be away for a moment.

– Avoid stopping at remote places.

– Park at well-lit places.

– If a stranger wants to talk to you, do not open your window widely, 5 to 6cm is enough to have a discussion. If you feel uneasy, drive off.

– Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

– Limit your trips at night.

– Watch out if people are congregating around you, this could be a sign you are about to be robbed.

– Vary your route to and from your destination.

– If strangers loiter near your driveway, rather drive past them, if it continues for a long time, request the police for assistance.

– Carjackers may stage a minor accident so they can approach your car, if you do not feel safe with the situation, drive away and report your accident at the nearest police station.

– Do not allow yourself to be boxed in, leave enough space for yourself from the vehicle in front of you to drive off.

– Make sure nobody follows you into your property.
