No spike attacks reported to Akasia police

More than five so-called spike attacks were reported on social media, yet none was reported with police.

After several reports of vehicles damaged in alleged spike traps on roads in the north of Pretoria this week, police said that none have been officially reported to them.

“There has not been a person reporting spikes at the station and Akasia police would like to urge anyone who has fallen prey to this barbaric act within our policing precinct to come forward,” said police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli.

The first of the so-called “spike attacks” was reported on social media platforms Wednesday morning.

The alleged incident took place on the N4, near the N17 crossing, that morning around 05:00.

That night security services and CPF groups shared the news of five more spike attacks in the Wintersnest area on the R566 (K8) road crossing near the N4 highway.

Mdluli said none of the attacks were reported to the police.

“Our crime prevention teams are patrolling the area, the highways in particular, as most social media allegations suggest that this is the point where spikes are usually placed,” she said.

“Akasia police strongly condemn the use of social media platforms to report criminal activity and not the police station.”

Mdluli said it was important that every criminal activity be recorded at the police station so that it could aid police in preventing crimes and knowing where patrols were needed.

“We appeal to the victims to come forward and report the incidents to the police.”

Mdluli said people should avoid spreading rumours on social media and stick to facts that can be verified by the police.

“Reports on social media can easily spiral out of control and this result in residents living in fear.”

Mdluli said by reporting crimes and working with the police, residents can ensure a safer community.
