Book about all aspects of living a gay life published

In the book, Schwarp said he shared practical advice and anecdotes on all aspects of being gay.

A new Afrikaans book titled Skeef, launched this week, aims to equip allies, parents, friends, and colleagues of LGBTIQ+ people with insight into the lived experiences of this community.

Written by radio host and media personality Renaldo Schwarp, the book was launched at the De Harte Venue in Pretoria North on Tuesday.

“The event was a celebration of local queer lives, representation and acceptance,” said Schwarp.

In the book, Schwarp said he shared practical advice and anecdotes on all aspects of being gay.

“I also consulted celebrities such as Rian van Heerden, Marc Lottering, Marco Spaumer and Joe Foster to paint a nuanced picture of contemporary gayness.”

He said guests at the launch included the likes of popular drag artist Betty Bangles, kykNET host Eloise Cupido, queer musicians Armand Joubert and Yahto Kraft. Also in attendance were musician and actor Shenay O’Brien and Kaya FM host Andy Maqondwana.

Schwarp said the event was hosted by RSG’s Sue Pyler and Jacaranda FM’s Dianne Broodryk.

“The book was published by LAPA Publishers. It is available at all bookstores and online.”

A bit more about the book, Schwarp said, “no subject is taboo in Skeef”.

He said he explored coming out, bullying, relationships, school days, varsity years, parents, representation, sex and religion.

The book followed Schwarp’s critically acclaimed documentary film with the same title. It focuses on the world of LGBTIQ+ South Africans, placing it in international and historical contexts.

“The documentary is currently streaming on Showmax. While the book is framed within a strong Afrikaans queer context, it dissects a wide variety of themes.”

He said in a startlingly honest chapter, his mother, Verenia Schwarp, talks about the challenges of raising gay children.
