Temba police hosts school talk at Lethamaga secondary school

"It seems now that drug dealers are targeting learners to sell them drugs."

Temba police visited Lethamaga secondary school in Ramotse (Hammmanskraal) on Monday to interact with learners about drug issues at the school.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi said the police were invited by the principal who reported that some learners are using and selling drugs at the school.

“He complained that the performance of learners has dropped because of drug use. We started with a school talk but we will come back for a school search.

“It seems now that drug dealers are targeting learners to sell their drugs. The drug dealers know these children can not be detained by the police. We have arrested learners who sell drugs at school and they are the ones who led us to the people who give them the drugs.”

Moremi said drug dealers approach learners who have already started smoking and offer them a percentage to sell drugs for them.

“These dealers know these children have pocket money so they know the children have access to money. I want to urge parents to reconsider giving their children a lot of money because the school offered them food for free.”

Moremi urged parents not to forget that it takes a village to raise a child and parents should assist teachers and the police.

“Once they give them a large amount of money to go to school with they will end up buying drugs, discipline starts at home. They should start educating their kids about the danger of substance abuse and report those dealing in drugs.”

Moremi said police interacted with grade 8 learners as they were the only ones present at the school.

The learners were also addressed about bullying, theft, and issues relating to discipline.

“We encouraged them to support one another and make sure they are not involved in criminal activities. We also sensitised them about human trafficking and encouraged them to report any criminal activities to teachers who will inform the police.”
