Couple arrested for locking children in the car in scorching heat

The children who were sweating and crying hysterically, were spotted by a concerned passer-by, in the couple's car.

A young couple, aged 26 and 29, was arrested on Wednesday morning for allegedly locking children inside a car while they were fetching water from a stream at Willow Park, in the east of Pretoria.

The ordeal happened near a construction site where a concerned passer-by spotted the six distressed children aged between one and five and contacted the Silverton police.

“It is believed that the couple drove to the stream to fetch water which they were going to use for religious practice,” said police spokesperson Isaac Mculu.

“When the police arrived at the scene they found a white Ford Tracer with children locked inside. The children were sweating and crying hysterically.”

Mculu said police officers had to guide the children to unlock the car from the inside, adding that paramedics were called to the scene immediately after, to provide medical assistance to the children.

The pair were charged with child neglect and will appear at the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
