Dumping site turned into sport facility
‘We want to improve the future of Nellmapius children by keeping them busy and away from drugs, criminals act and fight women and child abuse.’
An illegal dumping site in Nellmapius extension 1, where drug addicts used to hide, has been turned into a sports field.
The area was cleaned by the members of the Vhathu Phanda Community Forum in Mamelodi East together with residents during the launch of another branch in Nellmapius.
Lettie Abrams, a chairperson of Nellmapius Vhathu Phanda, said the illegal dumping site was used as a hideout for drug addicts and criminals causing headaches for the community.
The clean-up campaign and launch of a new branch in Nellmapius was held on September 10.
Vhathu Phanda has five branches across Mamelodi and Limpopo.
This non-profit organisation helps the community with social issues and also takes care of children after school.
“They heard about the organisation last year and were very keen to join and will help uplift the community of Nellmpius,” said Abrams.
The clean-up campaign started in the morning with clearing all the dirt at the illegal dumping site followed by cleaning the hideout for drug addicts and criminals.
“The place is clean and sparkling and they are planning to open Vhathu Phanda office on an empty land but they are waiting for the municipality’s permission first.
The new office aims to assist residents of Nellmapius with their social issues and problems.
“We want to improve the future of Nellmapius children by keeping them busy and away from drugs,” said Abrams.
Vhathu Phanda, chairperson of the Women’s Brigade, Boitumelo Mashakeng said as a forum they are happy that the organisation is growing bigger and bigger every day and soon they will have branches across the country.

“Our organisation is all about transforming the lives of our people through education and to help the community,” said Mashakeng.
Vathu Phanda aims to help by taking kids off the street and introducing them to sports, also to teach community members about health issues and Covid-19. They also cook for the needy and organise food parcels for vulnerable families.
“We are happy to be part of Nellmapius and that the people love our work. We will continue helping those in need,” said Mashakeng.
Patricia Rangwane (70) said he is happy with the work that the forum is doing in the community and he hopes God bless them to get donations to keep helping.
