North police celebrate women’s month at local schools
"Last month we could visit the schools because of the lockdown regulation, so we so it fit that we donate them this month."
Dube police and various organisations donated 400 sanitary pads to four different schools in Mmakaunyana (Winterveldt) recently.
Dube police spokesperson Thembi Nowathe said the sanitary pads were donated to Makgahlanong primary, Khubamelo primary, Masempane primary and Mmakaunyana secondary.
Nowathe said the donations were made as part of their women’s month commemoration.
“Last month we could not visit the schools because of the lockdown regulation, so we saw it fit that we donate them this month.”
Nowathe said during the visits to the schools, they also addressed the learners about issues relating to teenage pregnancy and other social problems that are happening in schools, in their communities and their homes.
“We addressed them about their behaviour towards teachers and encouraged them to behave better in school and their communities. We also encouraged them to dress in a presentable way.
“We also gave them a platform to speak to us about their challenges and we asked them to tell us what is it that we can do to assist them instead of telling them what to do.”

She said police would be visiting the schools to also give the necessary attention to the boys.

“We discussed with other stakeholders that we need to also focus on the boys.

“Most of the time the girls are made the priority and this seems like we are creating a separation between the children.
“We are planning to give them toiletries because some of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds.”
