Man hands himself over to Eersterust police after a search for him was launched

A search for the man was launched on Thursday last week by the Eersterust police.

A 42-year-old man handed himself over to Eersterust police station on Monday afternoon after a search was launched by the police as they believe he might be of assistance in an active murder investigation.
The identity of the man that is known by Rekord, cannot be named as he will only appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s court on Wednesday. Until then, he will remain in custody.
According to Eersterust police spokesperson, Sergeant Sam Shibambo, it is believed that the man was involved in an argument with Charles Cooper (30) in the early hours of the morning on Saturday August 28.
“On Thursday last week we appealed to the public to help locate the man.
“The man together with his uncle handed himself over to the police late on Monday afternoon.
“We are currently busy questioning the man and will soon open a case against him,” said Shibambo.
Cooper was stabbed several times in his upper body on the corners of Roots and Eastside avenues.
“According to eyewitnesses, the man and Cooper got into an altercation and that is when the incident occurred,” Shibambo said.
Police was informed that the victim was stabbed in the chest and was rushed to hospital by paramedics shortly after.
“Cooper was transported to Mamelodi Day hospital, but two days later he succumbed to his injuries.
“At this stage it is still unknown how many times the deceased was stabbed, but as soon as the post-mortem is done, we will be able to determine it,” he added.
Shibambo said police opened an investigation into Coopers death on September 1.
“Preliminary investigation has since revealed that the man could assist in the ongoing murder investigation,” he said.
