Pretoria West police raise awareness at Tshwane South College

"The students are affected by crimes such as common robberies, common assaults, and assault GBH."

Pretoria West police and various organisations including NGOs held a crime awareness campaign at Tshwane South College last Tuesday.

Constable Sibongile Vuma said the visit was prompted by some of the crimes affecting students in the area.

Vuma said most of the students were not even familiar with the area as they were renting rooms to be near the college.

“The students are affected by crimes such as common robberies and assaults.

“We also spoke to them about sexual offences and we gave them safety tips about how to avoid being victims.”

Vuma said students should avoid going to Wi-Fi hotspots and avoid using their phones while walking in the streets as they became targets for criminals.

“Criminals are targeting them because they know they have laptops and phones. Having headsets while they are walking also makes them targets for criminals because they see that they are relaxed and have something valuable.”

Students were also warned about forging results.

“Some of the students forge their results after finding out that they have failed. The students will forge the original results so that they can move to the next level.

“Some of the data capturers will notice that the results on the paper do not match with the ones on the system.

Others are only picked up after they have completed the course. So we encouraged the principal to involve the police because this is fraud.”
