Police warn against the rise of burglaries in the north

“We always have a spate of burglaries during the festive season.”

Rietgat police said residents going away on holiday this December must ask friends or family to keep an eye on their houses during that time.

“We always have a spate of burglaries during the festive season,” said Rietgat police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

Maluleka said criminals targeted households left unoccupied during this busy period.

“Most reported housebreakings and thefts are reported by people who were away or did not stay on the property full-time. In most cases, burglars gain entry by breaking windows or doors.

“Electrical appliances such as microwaves, plasma TV screens, sound systems and other valuable items get stolen during these break-ins.”

Maluleka said homeowners should ask someone they trusted to look after their property while they were gone.

He also asked anyone with information of stolen household goods and items as well as wanted suspects to share it with the police.

They can do this by contacting the station commander directly on 082 455 8236 or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or Rietgat SAPS on (012) 432 7806/7.”
