One of Tshwane’s oldest residents Khatija Jeeva Mahomed has passed away at the age of 98.
Khatija was the 10 000th person to receive a Covid-19 vaccine at the first drive-thru vaccination site in Pretoria in September.
Anti-crime activist and social activist Yusuf Abramjee confirmed on Friday that Khatija died in hospital.
“She was admitted to the Steve Biko hospital last week after she fell at her home in Centurion. She broke her hip in the process. Doctors were supposed to operate on her but she was too weak and too frail and apparently, they did an infusion but she sadly passed away last night.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with the family. She was looking forward to her 100th birthday but as the Almighty will, it was the time for her to leave,” he said.

“I remember when she got her vaccination on the 1st of September, she was delighted, it was almost like a dream come true for her,” Abramjee said.
Khatija was buried on Friday morning at the Laudium cemetery.
Her son earlier thanked the volunteers for presenting Khatija with vouchers valued at over R10 000 during her visit to the centre.
“It’s indeed an honour for my mum to be number 10 000. I came for my jab here two weeks ago and the service was super. I decided to bring my mum for her Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
“Now that she’s got it, it’s a relief,” Afzal said at the time.
