Man arrested over stock theft

The man was found in possession of 25 stolen goats.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on a charge of stock theft in the Hekpoort area on Monday.

According to police, they were conducting a routine stop-and-search in the area when they pulled over a white bakkie that was loaded with goats.

“Further investigation revealed that the goats belong to a farmer from Rustenburg who reported a case of stock theft earlier at SAPS Rustenburg,” a police statement read.

The driver of the bakkie was then arrested and the 25 stolen goats were recovered.

Meanwhile, three people were also arrested in the Northern Cape on a similar charge during the early hours of Monday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the trio were arrested when police followed up on information received about a bakkie with suspected stolen sheep.

“The information was operationalised in conjunction with members from Upington stock theft and endangered species unit.”

Masegela said the vehicle was found and the three male occupants who were transporting the sheep could not produce proof of ownership.

“Preliminary investigation led to the owner of the sheep who positively identified them through a tattoo mark.”

The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was then said to have been confiscated along with the sheep which were valued at R14 000.

“The three suspects aged 17, 21 and 29 are expected to appear in court soon,” Masegela said.
