School honours bus driver’s bravery

“Our driver was hit on the head with a hammer and the man jumped into the bus and drove off with it. He didn’t get very far, however, as the bus stalled.”

Hoërskool Zwartkop, Centurion, this week honoured one of their school bus drivers for his bravery in helping a parent who was attacked by an unknown man on Wednesday morning.

The incident happened as the parent dropped her son off at a nearby bus stop.

The unknown man hit the bus driver on the head with a hammer before speeding off in the bus.

The hijacker was stopped and arrested by security officers in Panorama Road and Marquard Street.

Some reports indicated that there were learners aboard the bus; however, the school clarified that no learners were aboard the bus when the hijacker drove off, as the driver managed to get them off the bus while the incident took place.

The school indicated one of their bus drivers, a learner at the school, and one of their shuttle buses were involved in the incident.

“A parent dropped her child off at the first collecting point of the route, where the bus was waiting.

“As she parked behind the bus, a man approached her and tried to force her car door open.”

It was reported that the learner had already been walking towards the bus, when he realised what was happening to his mother, and ran to the bus driver for assistance.

“Our driver was hit on the head with a hammer and the man jumped into the bus and drove off with it. He didn’t get very far, however, as the bus stalled.

“The parent managed to notify a security company, who responded immediately as they were in the vicinity.”

The school further indicated the bus driver suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene. Both the driver and the learner received the necessary psychological support.

Sergeant Divine Nkuna, a spokesperson at Wierdabrug police, confirmed the incident and said no learners were harmed.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson, Kyle van Reenen, confirmed the bus driver sustained minor injuries in the attack.

Nkuna said a case of hijacking was being investigated.
