Winterveldt man arrested for allegedly raping granny (94)

"After raping her for the third time, he demanded the house keys telling the victim that he will take care of her."

The community of Mmakaunyana, Winterveldt, has been left shocked after a 94-year-old woman was allegedly raped several times by a man who resides in the area on Monday.

Dube police spokesperson Thembi Nowathe said the victim was on her bed listening to radio when she heard a bang in the house around 22:00.

“She went to check and noticed a man in the kitchen window pulling the curtain so that he gained entry. He was carrying a big knife in his hand.

“The suspect told the victim not to scream. He then put the knife on the dining room table and proceeded to rape her.”

Nowathe said the man returned to rape her for the second time that same evening.

“He then came back to rape her for the third time. After raping her for the third time, he demanded the house keys telling the victim that he will ‘take care of her’ and the victim denied him so he then left.”

She said the victim managed to describe the suspect’s clothes and body features.

“Station commander Captain Portia Malatsi promptly conducted a search for the said suspect. They arrested him at his place of residence still wearing the same clothes that the victim had described.”

A neighbour, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of the victim, said the granny was living alone in the house.

“She is still very traumatised. We are still shocked at what happened to such an old woman. The man is known to community members but I do not know him because I am always in the house. The whole community has been shocked because of this incident.”

The neighbour said she has been struggling to sleep at night knowing that something like this could happen and she now feared for her children’s safety.

She said the only justice the community will accept for this incident is if the suspect was sentenced to imprisonment.

“We just want him to remain in jail.”

The man is expected to make his first appearance in the Ga-Rankuwa magistrate’s court on Wednesday.
